My Time At Diversitat Sweet Program
By Emily Millar

I first found out about sweet when I finished year 11 and was looking for something to do the future year. I was looking for a job when I found the SWEET advertisement. I was looking for something to do in the way of hairdressing or beauty, and when I found SWEET, my dreams had been answered.

My first day was just like any other persons first day at a new school. I didn’t know what to expect. If what I wore was O.K., what the people would be like, what the trainers would be like, and of course, was it going to be like my old school. It was a bit shaky at first, but we had to do a ‘get to know you’ questionnaire. You had to go around and ask other people different questions. I made new friends that day, including trainers.

My first day of hair and beauty was great. I seen our teacher as a fantastic person, full of vitality and fun. She was teaching us how to do manicure’s and I knew that we would have fun and learn the things that we needed to learn. I think I liked the work because it was new to me, we gave manicure’s to each other, and Jo was always there to help you. We done that for about 4 weeks, but of course, practise makes perfect.

The first thing I noticed that was different about sweet was the classrooms. Nothing like my previous school! I liked it a lot better, because if you needed help, the teacher was there for you. Not like my old school, where you had one teacher to 25 people. The work was pretty standard, so the teachers put me up to intermediate VCAL. That was another great thing about sweet. If you felt that the work was too easy for you, they could give you more difficult work.

My time at sweet has been memorable, fun, and even sometimes challenging. It is a place that I will never forget for a long time, but for all good reasons. It has given me a step up in the world, taught me more about myself and others, put me further towards a career, and given me so much in one year. If it wasn ’t for Diversitat’s SWEET, I would probably be watching Oprah right now instead of writing!

I just have one more thing to say before I go. Thank-you to all the trainers for helping me and all the other people in SWEET this year. Without you, we wouldn’t have achieved what we wanted to.
