Settlement & Community Support

Through facilitating the settlement of new arrivals in the region, encouraging the integration of migrants in the broader community and providing welfare and family services, we deliver of a number of programs that meet the individual and cultural needs of the Barwon South Western Region’s CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) communities.

Integrated Humanitarian Settlement Services (IHSS)

IHSS provides refugee families with a range of services and support for a period of six months after their arrival. We are able to assist with things like case management and referral, material goods and advocacy.

Over the past 12 months Diversitat has assisted around 100 newly arrived refugees to settle in Geelong. These families have come from a variety of countries and cultures including Burma, Afghanistan, Liberia and the Congo. The majority of these people arrive having experienced significant trauma and conflict in their country of origin.

Within two days of arrival Diversitat staff initiate contact with the refugee family and ensure that their accommodation and basic needs are being met. We then develop a settlement plan which includes visits to Centrelink, a medical check up, school enrolment, securing a property lease, the use of public transport and a range of other services.

Volunteers are  used as part of this program.

Settlement Grants Program (SGP) - Geelong

The Settlement Grants Program aims to support culturally and linguistically diverse families and individuals who have been in the country for more than six months and less than five years.

SGP Casework Services

This program helps individuals and familie access the correct information in regard to settlement including immigration, housing, health, education, employment, legal, schooling, language, referrals, orientation and social support etc.

Our program promotes networking, liaison with, and capacity building of, mainstream services to ensure they take culturally and linguistically diverse community needs and issues into consideration when planning service provision.

Target Group

The target group for SGP services include premanent residents who have arrived in the past five years as humanitarian entrants or family stream migrants with low English language proficiency; communities that require assistance to develop their capacity to organise, plan and advocate for services to meet their needs; and dependents of skilled migrants who have a low English language proficiency.

Complex Case Support

Complex Case Support (CCS) is an initiative of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) that recognises that some recently arrived Humanitarian Refugees may experience specific short term difficulties that place themselves and their families at risk.

If existing services provided under SGP and IHSS are insufficient to address these needs, local agencies may refer clients to DIAC and the needs of the family may be considered under CCS. DIAC may then refer the case to a selected provider (including Diversitat) that will develop a case plan proposal. The purpose of CCS is to provide targeted intervention to allow the family to return to normal functioning as soon as possible.
