Diversitat's Community Development team commenced fire safety information sessions during October at Corio Fire Station. These sessions aimed to educate our newly arrived communities about fire safety and hazards in and around their homes.

Lead fire fighter Gavin Fitzgerald explained the role of the Country Fire Authority in our community and the different equipment used. He emphasised the necessary safety measures to prevent accidental fires, domestic burns and what to do when a fire occurs in the home.

As most domestic accident occur in the kitchen, the Karen and Karenni participants took part in a demonstration in a kitchen setting which included how to properly use a stove, oven, iron, gas and electric heaters and hot water in the kitchen and bathroom.

Participants were provided with the telephone numbers to call should a domestic fire occur.

Further fire information sessions will be held in conjunction with the CFA early next year for new and established CALD communities.
