Bike education success

bike edDiversitat's Community and Settlement team, in collaboration with staff of the North Geelong Secondary College, organised a Bike / Road rules education session on Friday the 23rd of September 2011.

It was very timely being the last school day before the school holidays as many of the students often ride their bikes during the school break.

It The Program was a part of the Bike2work project and in most part funded by Shell Community grants and Diversitat.

Members of Bike Safe Geelong headed by Rory Wilson and Barton Van Laar facilitated the teaching process and it proved to be a highly successful event. The students, all of them teenagers, were taught about bikes, the parts that need to be checked before heading out on the road, the legal requirements, road rules as well as the safety precautions to be taken whilst ridding.

Many calls have been received to conduct similar sessions with students/adults from refugee background as road conditions/traffic signs in their countries differ from the Australian ones. At the end of the session, all the participants were given a tail and headlight to be installed in their bikes and a hi- Vis fluorescent jacket in case they are ridding when its dark.

In addition to the educational side of it, the bike education session also aimed to facilitate mobility of the participants and above all to make our Geelong roads safer.
